Renovering OA-14 in France (English inside please !)

Hello everyone,

I tried to read a few subjects in this forum, but my swedish is sooo bad, i use Google traduction which is not very good too ! There are sometimes strange traductions which are confusing.

First great congratulations to everyone anyway, there is a lot of good work here.

I own a OA-14 pair, which are quite uncommon in France, and i would like to bring them "to the top". I read subjects, it seems that i understood some things, but i am not sure. So i ask for english informations. I'm not a technician at all, i am a beginner. Thank you so much !

- I have replaced woofers by B65-OA-II. Must they be "glued" to the ABS ?

- Is t22OA worth replacement ? Which is the best ? 2 T22OA for a speaker our 4 ? Is Y-Configuration better, what does it brings ? Where must be the tweeters in Y-configuration ?

- Filters for OA-14 with B-65 and T22-OA: I understood that there were different versions ? which is the better ? What are your preferences ? Is the one selled by Hi-Fi Kit OK ? Are they any things to care about ?

No, you have the "foam stip" (?) around the hole - right?

I guess you could use only two on a speaker because the new tweeter is more capable. But then you need the new OA12 filter.
If you use four on each speaker you could put them as the original, but the developer (of the tweeter t22oa) Ingemar Öhman / Ingoehman recommend Y-configuration based on his measurements. I would do it "Y".

Hifikit only sells parts for the filter, they don't sell them ready-made I think. But they are the official retailer of parts to the filter.

the B65OA is well mounted.

HifiKit sells filter elements, but for the board we can use the original one ?

For the tweeters, it appears that there is not only one solution...

DS, what did you not like in th Y-configuration ?

I agree with you for the trial/error thing but there are many parameters : number, position, filters with frequency, order, attenuation...

I believe that maybe it would be good to "fix" something, for example number of tweeters and position, and adjust filter. What do you think about it, a good idea ?

Are there good experiences with T22-OA and OA14 ?

The Y-config makes aucustic recordings fell less alive*. Hard to put in words thou......

I think the Y-config makes it more like a direct beamer which takes away the OA14 experience a bit. Mayby i`ll give it a second chance some day...... Y-config doesn`t sound bad in any way, just diffrent

Ohh, and it`s not as nice to look at, Y-config is buttuggly

The Obi T22 tweeter is a extremly nice preformer with very low distorsion, go for it! If money isn`t an issue, go for 8 tweeeters!

Just mount a pot in series after the HP-filter to simply adjust the level of the tweeters while listening!

Thank you very much for your detailed response.

I will go for 8 tweeters, let's fix that. First going on classic configuration, see with attenuator, then maybe later Y-configuration (i believe it to need more work), we'll see.

I will study Hi-fi Kit filters...

You could get readymade filters for the Obi-configuration from "info@grafpro.se
They´ll cost you about 150 Euros for a pair plus freight. I´ve got a pair for my OA 12:s and they work wonderfully.

Grafpro also make filters for OA 14 as an OA 12. In others words - a OA 14 with just 2 tweeters. A little bit cheaper. And many say they can´t hear the difference. I am going to convert my OA 14 to this configuration myself.

I use grafpros filters on my OD11 and combined with B65OA11 and the new OBI T22 tweeter they really sound great.. Grafpros filter is so proffessional made , really nice design. I`ll sugest you e-mail him and ask if he could make you a pair of filters for your OA14.. The speakers is worth it..

If you don`t care aboud making it technically perfect, then you might as well go the inexpensive way.

Both woofers and tweeters are used by people that fixes up their old Sonab`s.

"Janch" on this forum have tried the woofers in the OA 116 and he is happy with them.

Thank you all for the informations, maybe they will help other english-speaking Sonab fans. The "less money" way is interesting too.

But for now, I will go with 4 tweeters and Grafpro filters...
