XPA Gen 3 Amplifiers

Appealing to the bespoke demands of the audiophile market, the XPA Gen 3 is all about personalization and configurability.

XPA Gen 3 is a custom-tailored component that can be endlessly tailored to individual systems – the opposite of “off-the-shelf.” It’s a reference-level audio amplifier ideal for everything from a single subwoofer, to a stereo playback system, or a complete home theater. Its unique, modular, assembled-in-the-USA architecture, means it can grow with system needs.

The XPA Gen 3 is a significant step above the Gen 2 line. Using Emotiva’s lauded XPR amplifier topology for superior sonics, and designed with highly flexible modularity, the XPA Gen 3 accommodates 1 to 7 channels, multiple power levels, and is ideal for applications from from reference stereo to surround sound.

All XPA Gen 3 amplifiers share the same chassis and power supply; fully modular construction means that any XPA G3 amp can be upgraded by up to seven channels at another time. Each channel combines Emotiva’s differential input, fully complementary, short signal path Class A/B amplifier circuitry, and Optimized Class H™ power topology, to deliver both true audiophile sound quality and high efficiency.

Emotiva’s new high performance universal switching power supply delivers exceptional efficiency and excellent low noise performance, automatically adapting to any line voltage between 100V and 250V, and reducing overall system weight for easier handling and installation. XPA Gen 3 can be configured from two channels (350 watts/channel into 8 ohms) up to seven channels (250 watts/channel into 8 ohms). Suggested retail prices are as follows.

XPA-2, 350 watts per channel (8 ohm): $999

Emersa

Emersa EMP-1 (MSRP: $899): This full 7.1 channel preamp processor with unbalanced analog outputs plus balanced subwoofer output, has built-in Bluetooth connectivity, Dirac Live ™ room correction, USB DAC, and an Ethernet remote control option. The EMP-1 features an elegant aluminum chassis and includes a machined aluminum infrared remote control.



Emersa EPA-1 (MSRP: $599): Contemporary stereo preamp with digital audio inputs. An intelligent graphical OLED display automatically provides full support for the options installed. Standard support for 4 pairs of stereo line level analog inputs and one moving magnet phono input.



In stereo mode, the EPA-1 can be connected to a standard stereo power amp or a pair of powered speakers. In 2.1-channel mode, the main outputs on the EPA-1 can be configured with a fixed 80 Hz high-pass crossover, and a separate summed output is provided to connect a subwoofer.

With the Emersa EPA-1, support for various digital audio options provided by installing one of three optional Digital Input modules:

The DAC1 input module provides basic support for streaming audio via USB
The DAC2 input module offers an audiophile-quality USB audio input featuring an AKM 32-bit D/A converter
The Universal Streaming module offers digital audio streaming via USB, WiFi, Bluetooth, and Ethernet connections

Emersa EPI-1 (MSRP: $799). An optional stereo integrated amplifier with digital audio inputs, the Emersa EPI-1 combines all of the features of the Emersa EPA-1 (including the slim chassis and optional digital input modules) with two channels of ICEpower Class-D power amplification delivering 100 watts RMS per channel.

Emersa Amp (three models). Like the EPA-1 and EPI-1, Emersa Amps share are designed with the same slim, elegant 1RU chassis, and lightweight, ultra-efficient ICEpower Class-D power amplification found throughout the line. Individually they are:

Emersa EDA-2 (MSRP: $599): 2 channels; 150 watts/channel into 8 ohms.

Smidigt sätt att bygga ut vid behöv av mer prestanda, undrar om det finns olika moduler för olika upplägg eller om det är samma ?!

Customization Galore

You can choose to configure the Gen 3 amplifier to accommodate anywhere from 1 to 7 channels in a single chassis and choose multiple power levels per channel. For example, let’s say you have a two channel system today, you can order a stereo configured XPA Gen 3. If you upgrade to 5.1 later, you can upgrade that two channel amplifier to 5 channels—all the way up to 7 channels by simply adding an amp module per channel at a time. The minimum recommended module load, according to Emotiva is two channels with the standard modules.

According to Emotiva, all modules are capable of 350 watts into 8 ohms. However, if you go for a 5 channel version, you’ll note that the power is a bit lower. This is not a limitation of the module but rather has to do with the total power capability of the Switched Mode Power Supply (more on that below). Emotiva told me that any channel can be driven to maximum power. However, when all five channels are driven simultaneously, the total power per channel is reduced slightly. That’s certainly not a big deal, but a footnote we wanted to mention since here at Audioholics we always like to see amplifier specs full bandwidth rated and with all channels driven.

But what if you want a monoblock design like Emotiva’s Gen 2 XPA-1? Well, for audiophiles who want the purity of monoblocks, Emotiva will be releasing a high power, “double-wide” balanced mono-block module. The XPA Gen 3 chassis will be able to accommodate up to three double-wide modules. Each high power module will allow for an incredible +500 watts at 8 ohms. As you’ve come to expect from Emotiva both the double-wide and standard modules are stable into 2 ohm loads.

Because the entire architecture is modular, you can upgrade any XPA Gen 3 amplifier at any time to grow as your needs grow. Upgrading your amp, however, won’t be user-installable. You’ll need to ship the amp back to Emotiva or have one of Emotiva’s qualified international distribution partners do the installation.

Emotiva says that each channel combines differential input, fully complementary, short signal path Class A/B amplifier circuitry, and an optimized Class H power topology to deliver both audiophile-grade sound and high efficiency.

Synd bara att EMP-1 blev så väldigt försenad att den var omodern innan den kom ut. Dirac är trevlig, men något som kommer ut nu behöver fler kanaler och Atmos/Auro/DTS:X. Sen tror jag man bytte till Dirac på vägen och en sådan förändring är ju sällan tidgynnsam, men framför allt har det nog varit mjukvaruproblem. Jag skulle nog hålla mig till deras slutsteg...

XPA-2 verkar intressant. Frågan är om den kan driva Ino profundus Y-6 utan problem?

Varför XPA-2? Vore inte XPA-3 mer lämpligt?
Nu ska stegen förvisso vara stabila ända ner i 2 ohm så det är väl teoretiskt möjligt med XPA-2.

Det verkar inte som att så är fallet dock
Det förtar lite av de initialt positiva känslorna över denna lösning, tycker jag...

Så är det ju inte så stor skillnad för användaren i slutänden ändå, om man måste lämna in steget för att ändra antalet kanaler.
Men klart att det GÅR säkert utmärkt att göra själv, om man får tag på steg moduler som någon säljer beggat osv...
Men hur blir det då med garanti osv... Ja nej det är trist att dom inte verkar vara öppna för att man får stoppa i moduler själv.

DET hade varit ett nytänk och en himla bra lösning för många där ute !

Skulle vara intressant att få ta del av oberoende mätningar och lyssningstest av något av dessa steg. Vad jag vet har inte LTS lyssnat på någon konventionell förstärkare med switchande nätdel. (Jag är för lat och har inte tid för att själv lyssningstesta och därför medlem) Fördelarna med den typen av nätdelar är bla att man slipper transformatorn vilket gör förstärkarna mycket lättare. Risken för att produktserien läggs ner pga hanteringsproblem borde då bli mindre.
Min känsla av Emotiva är att man är för små för/inte bryr sig om att hänga med på utveckling av apparater med hightec innehåll där ny mjukvara/format/gränssnitt eller nya trender tvingar fram uppgraderingar eller nya produkter.
Lowtec-apparater som slutsteg släpper man då och då och ibland (oseriöst) med nya namn på äldre produkter där någon detalj eller design förändrats typ "Gen2". Man är dåliga på att analysera marknadens egentliga behov. Relativt få kunder torde behöva en XPR-2 och man kan då inte förvänta sig att dom ska gå åt som smör i solsken. Å andra sidan törs man inte stå upp med rak rygg och hävda kvaliteten på äldre produkter som visat sig ha goda egenskaper. (XPA-2)
