"The Beolab 5 is so capable in so many respects that it leaves very little room for criticism."
The Beolab 5 will appeal more to the cerebral consciousness than the emotional subconscious, its strengths lying more in understatement and discretion than in drama and tension. But by that token, no loudspeaker in my experience has been more able to sonically "disappear" from the room, leaving just the sound of music hanging there in air. Few other speakers have such a small sonic signature, and none of those that do combine it with the Beolab 5’s exceptional bass power and extension. While it’s true that the room compensation might have been more effective, the crucial factor is that the excellence of this revolutionary loudspeaker should be fully and consistently realized regardless of the room in which it’s used. That alone represents a true reinvention of the loudspeaker as we know it."

"In use, the immediate impression is of exceptionally precise and detailed stereo imaging, superbly even-handed overall neutrality and very low coloration throughout. The lens system is extremely effective, and the speakers themselves seem to disappear - acoustically speaking.
The bass is about as good as it gets, imparting magnificent weight and power whenever required, while avoiding any unwanted thump, thickening or boxiness. A further bonus is that it goes very, very loud indeed, and does so without changing character or getting aggressive.
This is a remarkable and genuinely revolutionary loudspeaker, which will do much to enhance BangO's hi-fi credibility. A pair will fill even the biggest room with seriously loud sound, and powerful, even bass. It's expensive, but it's very, very good."

"Beolab 5 uses a clever woofer equalization scheme which seems to work well. It had, for example, no problem reproducing the very low frequency drum note at the beginning of the 'Temple Caves' track from the Planet Drum CD, when several over $40,000 speaker setups had failed the test"

"Det låter kolossalt om det nya systemet Beolab 5. Från själva högtalarna hörs inte ett knäpp. Ljudet verkar istället komma nästa alla andra håll, högt ovanifrån, långt utåt sidorna, från flera meter bakom högtalarna. Helt frigjort från högtalarna. Och som om rummets väggar bara försvann. På några av de inspelningar B & O-folket använder för demonstration känns det som om det vore möjligt att knalla fram till musikerna och skaka hand. "

"That said, the best sound I heard at the Consumer Electronics Show, or any audio demonstration for that matter, was Bang & Olufsen's remarkable new BeoLab 5. Historically, the Danish manufacturer has gone its own way in the audio world and was not the first choice among audiophiles looking for "the ultimate" speaker system. All that has changed with the BeoLab 5.
The BeoLab 5 combines several unique technologies to produce its fabulous sound. A licensed "acoustic lens" technology focuses and disperses the sound, and 2,500 watts of amplification are built in to each speaker. One would think that incorporating amplifiers totaling 2,500 watts would make for a speaker the size of a refrigerator; fortunately, this is not the case. The amplifiers are Bang & Olufsen's ICE power digital amplifiers, which are small and run cool.
The BeoLab 5 calibrates itself to match room acoustics. A small microphone extends from the base of the speakers and test tones are played for a few minutes. The speaker measures the test tones and automatically sets itself for optimum performance.
The end result? It is hard to describe, but suffice it to say this jaded audiophile was pretty much blown away. The sound is full, natural, perfectly balanced tonally and effortlessly dynamic. Bass is incredibly tight and deep. I did not want the demonstration to end -- I could have melted in my seat."
